Behind the Bench

Meet the Maker

I’ve had a passion for making since the moment I began collecting rocks and crystals as a small child – I was drawn to anything shiny or sparkly and would spend hours playing with wire, beads and customising pieces of costume jewellery with a pair of pliers! I love the combination of gold and silver in the same piece so you’ll notice quite a lot of that in my work. I’m a magpie when it comes to precious stones, and I’ve collected far more than I’d like to admit… All of my work is made entirely by hand using traditional techniques such as chasing, repoussé, Keum-boo and fine soldering.

Qualifications & Training

After graduating from Liverpool Hope University with a BDes Hons, I continued my postgraduate study at the prestigious Bishopsland Educational Trust to further develop my skills under the guidance of highly respected silversmiths and master craftsmen, becoming a Bishopsland Fellow in 2010. I was then invited to join the Design Space programme in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter to learn about business setup from industry jewellers, and moved into a studio with 8 other makers who have become life-long friends. I now work from my lovely old farmhouse near the sea in the stunning surroundings of Cornwall.

Aftercare
Silver will always tarnish naturally and harsh chemicals such as household cleaners and perfumes can be quite damaging to precious metals, so I recommend cleaning and maintaining the appearance of your piece to prolong it's lifespan. Highly polished finishes will only need a quick buff every once in a while with a jewellery polishing cloth. If you have a piece with a mixture of different finishes, such as matte and mirror, it's often best to use a product called Silver Dip or Silver Foam to preserve the finish. These products are available on the highstreet and are gentle with most precious jewellery, however, they must never make contact with porous stones or pearls as it will permanently damage their lustre.

All ALW pieces come with their own individual care instructions to ensure they retain their beauty for many years to come.
Repairs & Refinishing
If your ALW piece isn't quite the perfect fit and needs a minor tweak, I'm very happy to adjust it for you, free of charge, for as long as you own it (subject to requirement and inspection).

If your piece has been accidentally damaged through cleaning, using or wearing, it may be necessary to have it repaired or re-finished to bring it back to its original splendour. It's recommended this is carried out by myself to preserve the authenticity of the piece. Costs for this service will vary depending on the work involved, but can usually be carried out for a small, reasonable fee, which I will always agree with you first.
